Lamp Light
I love candlelight……….
My wrinkles look better.
My hiney looks smaller.
I store all of my candles in this buffet.
Lately though……I have put my candles to the side and found a new/old love.
I am not a newbie to oil lamps….and have grown up with them.
When hurricanes hit in our parts….and the lights go out……we board up the windows…..pull out the tater chips and bologna sandwiches and light our oil lamps.
All, in that order.
At least my family does.
We just do not usually use them for “ambiance”.
But lately…….I have changed my ways.
I pulled our oil lamps out the other day…..thinking…why not?
I purchased the “smokeless”, “odorless”, oil from Walmart….
And have enjoyed the romantic/nostalgic lighting that an oil lamp offers.
There is something about it that brings you to a simpler time.
A time when lights go out and families come together.
Simplicity.
Do you have any oil lamps?
Do you use them regularly…..or just as decor?
Pull them out…..feel their magic.
We enjoyed ours this evening as a family.
Bringing us all together.
They were the perfect addition tonight when we were watching our recorded edition of “Gene Simmon”s Family Jewels” and “Pawn Stars”.
Seriously.
What’s wrong with that?
You feel less guilty watching reality shows by lamplight.
Sorta’.
At least my wrinkles looked good and my hiney looked smaller…..
Ok…maybe they didn’t….but we do love the lamp light.
Do you use your oil lamps?
Do you have any?
Let me know.
Love,
Me

We have several old ones from hubby’s grandmother, don’t use them though. I’m not sure why, I think I’m afraid of the smell/smoke and mess. also afraid of accidentally knocking one over. You sure have got me analyzing this topic Lol !!
Take care, VBg
I just have candles but have seen oil lamps here and there. A little leery of using them though. Don’t know why. Bigger flame faster fire maybe?! Love the look. I personally look much better in the dark, forget candle light.
I don’t have any, but I do like them. My grandmother had one and I always liked it.
We have a colletion of oil lamps that are being stored in the basement. The first one we purchased on our one year wedding anniversary (23 years ago). I think it is time to bring them out again!
Oh I remember oil lamps! My parents had them. I don’t have any myself but after reading this and seeing those pics (and the idea my hiney might look smaller) I’m feeling all nostalgic and I think I’m gonna have to get some!
@4f7fb178b85c26a869b581b3a241d813:disqus I felt the same way….the smell but also the fear of knocking them over. Kids are older….no pets running around and smoke and odor free oil. Time to rethink ; ) Love, Me
@NordicGirl2:disqus Too funny! I think I was leery because of kids and smell. My life can enjoy them now. : ) Love, Me
@85e67814f9e8770ddeec450b7e3cd2fe It may be your time to enjoy the feeling of “going back in time”. They are always at thrift stores…yard sales…..may be a fun time to start. Just make sure to get the right kind of oil! Love, me
@0225635aba582754256db8d90fd9a26c:disqus Enjoy! I bet they are so pretty! You may need to wash well, and get a new wick as they may have the stinky stuff in them. I learned that from experience ; ) Love, Me
@google-ca939d29b04761df69178a579d7eb8d0:disqus I can eat a bag of chips, while they are lit, and my hiney STILL looks smaller ; ) Thrift stores and yard sales are a great place to start! If you buy one already used…wash it well and make sure to get a new wick. The old oil is stinky and smokey…..I learned that by just filling our old one up with the non-smelling oil….didn’t work. I had to clean it well and get new wick, then pour in non-stinky oil. Wicks and oil are pretty cheap! Enjoy! Such a pretty ambiance. Everyone always comments on. Love, Me
Yes, new wicks!
I do have oil lamps tucked away in my garage for an emergency. I did just buy a new decorative one at home goods. I think i will light up the yard thanks to your inspiration. Yours is such a pretty green glass.
Lovely… and so homey. Love the feeling of serenity it gives to your room . Thanks for participating in Show Off Your Cottage Monday and bringing me here. I have truly enjoy my time here.
Be Blessed

Great idea! I have one filled with citronella oil I use on my deck in the summer. They are really beautiful!

Hi… I couldn’t find an email for you… just wanted to let you know I will be featuring this post on our next SHOW OFF YOUR COTTAGE MONDAY… so plan on being there! 😉
Cielo
I used to have several and then gave them all away except one which is down in the basement on a shelf somewhere. I too love them — it does remind us of simpler times (well, times I’ve HEARD about but not actually LIVED — haha!) Thanks for a lovely post!
I hope you do! Mine was a lucky yard sale find. Enjoy yours and the magic it brings! Love, Me

@dcd955dd5c05e2a72276026e30b93751:disqus I love that idea! I have a friend that uses hers with cintronella! I think I need to try that out! Love, Me
@53d67273bae41aa7a124d6c366ba7d60Â I’m honored!!! Thank yo so much for that honor and for coming by! Love, Me
@3c73cf011da38b9c8014535ad9599f14:disqus Times I have heard about too….but hopefully can make some simpler times for my kids…so they won’t just “hear” about them…even if it starts with my lamplight. Let’s give it a try! Love, Me
I’m just catching up on your blog after discovering you a few days ago…and I’m hooked! I’ve already spent hours reading your posts! I’m working on refinishing several pieces, but this post especially caught my eye. I have two lamps, one from my Oma’s house and one from my husband’s family…and I have never known quite what to do with them beyond display them on a shelf. I cherish them but often wished they took more of a center stage role in my house…I truly never thought to use them as they were intended, but now I’m beyond excited to try this out myself! Thanks for the inspiration(s)!
