When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

This week I was excited about the opportunity to get back to blogging.

If you read my last post, you know that I have had life changes that are requiring new scheduling and time management.

I felt like I had “gotten back into the groove”…….

And then 26 people died.

And  I was reminded that “it wasn’t all about me.”

20 babies……..

6 adults……..

And we struggle to understand what we are feeling………

What we are seeing………….

And no matter how we try to define it.

Put it into words.

There are evil people, who do evil things.

There are good people that senselessly die.

Today I needed to come back to you to say…….

I know you are hurting.

I know you are confused.

I know many of you are impacted in ways I can’t even understand.

I know you are holding tighter to your children.

I know you may even be looking at your own parenting in a different light.

I know you are crying.

I know you may even be scared.

I know your heart is broken for parents who have lost their children.

I know your hearts are breaking for children who have lost their parents.

This I do know.

This I can hold onto.

This is what I feel as well.

And this is what I want to just leave you with today.

Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

And this post is not going to be my “soapbox” of what is wrong in our nation. Our world. Our young men.

It is just my attempt to make sense of a senseless, vicious and emotionless attack.

What can we understand?

There was an attacker that had no “empathy”.

What can we make sense of?

That what you and I are feeling…….

It is called “empathy”.

And that there are others without it.

You hear the words “desensitized” when describing the selfish people that do these senseless attacks.

I can only make sense myself by thinking it is even deeper than desensitization.

To me….

What makes sense, is that we have a generation of people with a lack of empathy.

And today…….

I pray for ways that we can raise children with more empathy.

I pray for ways we can reach others without it and learn how to help instill it.

And in our youth….I pray for ways that we can stop strengthening the lack of it.

Do we give them tools that encourage the lack of an ability to understand and share the feelings of others?

Do we ignore the lack of it?

Do we even recognize it?

I am just trying to make sense of this myself.

Because MY heart is breaking.

And my heart empathizes with those that are broken and in pain.

And I know you feel this as well.

So today I wanted to thank you for your “empathy” for those in pain.

And know that I mourn with you.

Thank you for sharing your feelings with us. My heart is breaking, as well. All our hearts are breaking. Sometimes, I feel the whole world has gone crazy. Then I remember, it is not the whole world, but just a handful, out of the millions, who have no empathy, no sense of the pain they are bringing to others with their senseless acts. I guess maybe the only way to deal with this kind of event is to realize that we cannot possibly understand it. There is no way to understand or to make sense of a deranged mind. It is a hopeless feeling, to know that we cannot prevent evil, nor can we understand evil. We can only reach out, with love, and hold tight to the good that remains in the world, to love in the grip of our pain. Hugs

This was without doubt the best entry I have read about the sad things that happened on Friday, out of every blog I have read. You said it so succinctly… we need to breed empathy in our children! Thank you for making it so simple.

I came to your blog through a link Mary Ann sent me and am so glad I did. I wish everyone could. I’m not very tech savvy but will try to go through your FB link and send it to mine.
