Last minute gift idea! Easy Chalkboards!

Want a great last minute gift and an easy chalkboard tutorial?

Well, you have come to the right place.

Many of you have emailed and asked how my new job has been going so I thought I would give you a quick update, introduce some of the girls I work with…..all while showing you my last minute gift idea.

My new job has had it’s challenges but the people that I work with have not been one of them.

I wanted to thank them for how sweet and helpful they have been with this “new girl” this Christmas. I also waited until last minute, so, I took old pictures, a few mirrors and made chalkboards as gifts for all the girls in the office.

Here are a few of the chalkboards that each “girl” chose.

I probably shouldn’t give out their names without asking, so instead I am going to give them a “nick-name” without asking.

I will call us all the “Spice Girls“.

This is Southern Spice”. Southern as shrimp and grits. Seriously.

She grabbed this faster than I could take it out of the back of my car. An old antique mirror turned little chalkboard.

She is so helpful and has a life story that is waiting to be written into a book.

She always says.…”What’s the name of your blog again?”

And I always say.... “You Are Talking Too Much.”

And she ALWAYS says.…”I know. I’m sorry. Now, what’s the name of your blog again?”

And she’s serious.

Love her.

This is “Sasssssy Spice”.

She brings out the rotten in me.

Or I bring out the rotten in her?

She has been at the office over eight years AND I COULD ALMOST BE HER MOTHER. She is like the Victoria Beckham of our “spice girls”. She is the one I have to bug ALL the time.

No matter what, she always stops what she is doing and answer my questions and never complains.

To my face. ; )

My favorite thing about her?

SHE THINKS I’M SO FUNNY!!!! Because of that she’s my new. best. friend.

She doesn’t even know it. We’re close like that.

Her chalkboard was transformed from a thrift store mirror. So cute! Just like her!

The next last minute gift was for the young lady that has an office right next to mine.

Snazzzzzzy Spice“. As pretty on the inside as the outside.

Our offices are side by side when you walk in the door.

When people call, they say something like this…..”I came in and talked to the ‘pretty’ girl in the front office.”

And I say, “Do you know her name”.

And they say…”The pretty one.”

Now, I ask you….how am I supposed to take that?

I’m the other girl in the front office?

If I politely try to get clarification without asking if it was me or “Snazzy”…they will usually say, “It was the pretty one on the right.”

And I will say, with fingers crossed, in hopes that maybe this time they mean me, “Ummm do you mean, your right or my right?”

They will get frustrated and I will just sigh and tell “Snazzy Spice” that she has a phone call.

Snazzy picked an old picture that I had transformed into a chalkboard. She was so funny and couldn’t decide which one to get. She loves the small chalkboard idea because she has little wall space. Don’t think your chalkboards have to be big…think small too!

Next up….”Shimmer Spice“.

#1. She needs her own blog. She is creative. Did.I.Over-do.The.Periods?

#2. She ALWAYS looks put together.

#3. She needs to teach me how to do my lipstick and lip liner. Please tell her.

She picked the other antique mirror/transformed chalkboard and by now has probably transformed it into something way more fabulous by sprinkling her creative magic dust all over it. She’s good like that.

This isn’t everyone and we just snapped a few phone pics but if you need last minute gifts, don’t forget this easy and affordable idea!

Take thrift store mirrors, old pictures and make them into chalkboards.

Right on the glass and the mirror.

I didn’t even tape it off. I just started on the edges with a small brush……

Painted three coats and painted my frames.

Then I distressed it up a bit…..

That easy.

Hey, it’s me! This was the chalkboard for my “boss”. I am modeling it while she was in a meeting and I was supposed to be working.

Please keep me from wearing this vest like that again.

And there you have a last minute gift and happy co-workers, or friends, or family members.

Easy enough?

Remember that you can check out all of my other chalkboard projects in my side bar.

Have you made your chalkboards yet?

Did you make an chalkboards for gifts this year?

Have a great last minute gift idea?

I would love to know.

Sarcastic Spice! I have gotten so frustrated many times with the chalkboard thing. I cannot seem to keep the chalkboard paint off the frame and the paint off the chalkboard. And now you say you didn’t even tape off. Just use a small brush? Explain it again please! Sincerely, Dummy Spice 🙂

These are all adorable! Thanks for the tutorial and ideas! I’ve recently been attacking poor innocent frames to be given new life in my home as fabric covered trays, but I have yet to try this chalkboard idea. Thanks for the inspiration!

Great idea! I have some old windows I want to paint with chalkboard paint – I assume it will work the same as on a mirror, right? Have you done that? I love your post!

The chalkboards and co-workers are all beautiful. 🙂 So glad to know you are in a good new environment! (I’m back at work, after 22 years off to raise younguns) It’s both scary and exhilarating!
I’ve made a couple of magnetic chalkboards for my young college friends. Just used several coats of chalkboard spraypaint on a 12″ square piece of galvanized metal sheeting… from Home Depot. (beware, there are aluminum squares too, and they aren’t magnetic!) Then I put these into square frames (with 12″ openings) that I found at Good Will. I currently love the contrast of black board surrounded by Rustoleum’s Heirloom White.
My young friends report that the paint is holding up well, inspite of magnets.
Thanks for the great tutorial and happy update!
